lanwanman1956 Wow! Got here via several mentions in the Big Big Train FB group. Glad I made the trip. I remember being equal parts intrigued and puzzled by Kate Bush on first exposure and this so much brings to mind the drama and theatricality mixed with great talent that made me a fan of Kate Bush. I can say that I am now a fan of Beatrix Players. Favorite track: Rushlight.

Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) As the "Beatrix Players" explain themselves, they owe their name to a common archetype of a multi-faceted character in history, theater, screenplay, and literature, incidentally (or maybe not?) named "Beatrix", and frequently playing a tragic role or being doomed to a tragic fate - although the name's literal translation is "she who makes happy". This antagonism of tragedy and happiness describes their music quite well. While it's usually quite dark and melancholic, it has a fascinating beauty that gives the listener a good feeling. Moreover, this album gives me a happy flashback, 40 years backwards, to a time when Kate Bush created her first two unforgettable masterpieces. It's interesting that this obvious similarity is purely coincidental, because Kate Bush is not among the trio's main influences, as Jess Kennedy admits... As to the songwriting process, songs are usually created from a basic idea by Jess Kennedy, complemented by vocal melodies and lyrics contributed by Amy Birks, and getting their finishing touch from Amanda Alvarez by adding her cello arrangements. On the bottom line, "Magnified" is an overwhelming work of art that makes me long for more of this kind. Favorite track: Mole Hill.

Rushlight 04:13
Rushlight I cannot be thrown away like a paper cup And I cannot be blown out like a rushlight Like a rushlight on a winters night I cannot be tossed aside like a summer kite And I cannot be put away like a Christmas light Like a Christmas Light But tell me do you see it Do you feel it too Just like only mothers Only mothers do Because I cannot be pushed along like a wooden toy And I cannot be taken out for an annual dust For an annual dust But tell me Do you see it Do you feel it too Just like only mothers Only mothers do I will not be passed around like a new born child And I cannot be given back at the end of the night At the end of the night But tell me, do you see it Do you feel it too Just like only mothers Only mothers do

Lady Of The Lake Lady of the lake Feel her calling you Lady of the lake Tis not my fault You followed me Tis not my fault Just the way it’s always been Tis all your fault You chose to worship me Tis all your fault You fell in love with me Lady of the lake Feel her calling you Lady of the lake See how she’s there for you Lady of the lake See how she cares for you Lady of the lake Tis all but gone The way it has to be Tis all but gone Now leave the rest to fate Tis all but gone Your heart replaced with hate Tis all but gone The love you held for me Lady of the lake Feel her calling you Lady of the lake See how she’s there for you Lady of the lake See how she cares for you Lady of the lake There’ll be some you can help And some will defy There’ll be some that rise u And those that will hide There’ll be some that will smile And those that will cry But at least you can rest Just knowing you’ve tried Just knowing you’ve tried

Never Again 03:40
Never Again I see myself Looking down At the hard cold concrete Beneath my feet Feeling like The walk of shame In the middle of the day The sun hits my tears And blinds my thoughts And in this moment I am numb Another night and surely I’m done I tell myself Never again Oh, never again There is no truth In this life that I’ve come to know And I’m ashamed to say That I know it so well I know it so well I’ll cut my hair Become courageous For I will live to outdate this Take a risk and find strength Conjure the strength of the Howarth sisters I try to walk I try to run But your words press upon me And all faith is gone Feeling like The walk of shame In the middle of the day The sun hits my tears I tell myself Never again Oh, never again There is no truth In this life that I’ve come to know And I’m ashamed to say That I know it so well I know it so well I’ll cut my hair Become courageous For I will live to outdate this Take a risk and find strength Conjure the strength of the Howarth sisters

Not For The First Time Not for the first time Have I felt alone in this goddamn city And not for the first time Have I seen hearts as hard as an India-rubber ball Not for the first time Have I heard words beyond pity And not for the first time Have I heard a friend’s familiar cry Not for the first time Have I felt alone in this goddamn city So if that’s the case Oh why oh why are we still here Not for the last time Will I feel anger when I should not Not for the last time Will I feel afraid Not for the last time Will I hear a friend’s familiar cry So if that’s the case Oh why oh why are we still here

Mole Hill 03:18
Molehill So I can’t write a love song Though I try everyday Not a pretty picture But who is anyway I’m not blessed with a trip switch I’d like connecting, feeling no pain And I try to deliver On anything I say But when I look in the mirror The colour runs away I’m not blessed with a trip switch I’d like connecting, feeling no pain Feeling no pain… That Molehill Now a mountain As I wave goodbye to time Refusing to be blinded by foresight And I can’t fix your problems Though I try all the same And I don’t have the time But say yes anyway That Molehill Now a mountain As I wave goodbye to time Refusing to be blinded by foresight

What Do You Say What do you say when you see the looks they’re giving Giving each other daily And what do you say when you hear the words they’re speaking, Throwing sly remarks, failing One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the time we’ve spent Talking and I don’t know if there’s anything left One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the tears you’ve shed So come on, come on What do you say when you see their hearts breaking Beating a little softer, fading What do you say when you see their vows caving Caving under pressure, shaking One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the time we’ve spent Talking and I don’t know if there’s anything left One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the tears you’ve shed So come on, come on You may find the truth Find the faults Find the answers you’ve been looking for You may find the truth Find the faults Find the answers you’ve been looking for One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the time we’ve spent Talking and I don’t know if there’s anything left One, two, three, four, five, six Lost count of the tears you’ve shed So come on, come on

Ophelia 02:39
Ophelia Ophelia, what you gone and done? Ophelia Why? Caught in the cookie jar Now he’s going to make you cry Ophelia run, run, run Child you know I’m right Tie your shoelaces tight Hold on to your kite You may have to weave your way Through the tears and the fears girl Past the francoists And the father That you never actually asked for You know, Satisfaction will never come, Run away or grab a gun Ask your mother, I’m sure she has one If you fail then dear, I will grab my wand Ophelia, why child, let your mind slip into a labyrinth So, so far that you can’t climb out Where no one can hear your cries You may have to weave your way Through the tears and the fears girls, Past the francoists And the father That you never actually asked for You know, Satisfaction will never come, Run away or grab a gun Ask your mother, I’m sure she has one If you fail then dear, I will grab my wand

Walk Away 03:02
Walk Away Tears fall faster today Now don’t you see You are leaving him Oh, not just me Now don’t you feel Slight remorse, slight regret Oh he’s your child Not an absent mind But you go on As though you were blind And all you got Is a jaded smile? But you won’t leave those woods You won’t leave those woods But I cannot let you Walk Away, walk away, walk from him now I cannot let you Walk Away, walk away, walk from him now But you will never leave those woods The clock strikes Just like your bite But before the time You choose to live by The eyes say everything As they turn to gaze At the lonely gate You won’t even look at his face You will be faced with your own disgrace But you won’t leave those woods You won’t leave those woods But I cannot let you Walk Away, walk away, walk from him now I cannot let you Walk Away, walk away, walk from him now You will never leave those woods

Obey Me 05:30
Obey Me I’m not saying don’t look But don’t look beyond But I’m saying don’t stay Unless you’re here to work You fall short And I’ll respond Wave my hand I get what I want I’m not saying I’m wrong You just made it so But I’m saying don’t go Fear you always will Just say yes and I am yours No hearts and flowers It’s not what I know But you should know That I will go crazy If you do not obey me Obey me baby I’m not saying don’t bite But don’t bite that lip But I’m saying don’t fight Fight against my grip Say the words and I will stop Don’t read minds so shout them loud Not saying its your fault But it kinda is Not saying we rushed We just went too hard Won’t take another step Until you ask me to Next time you trip Gonna use my whip But you should know That I will go crazy If you do not obey me Obey me baby

Unpolished Pearl Hold your horses, oh little ones Why do I feel like the old one here? Pop a stamp on my head and put me in a post box I want to get the hell out of here And I scream louder than ever before Stuck in some kind of sleep paralysis And I can’t awake, they won’t let me I guess I will always be that unpolished pearl Bestrode my fantasy of a better life A fixation comes flooding in to greet me with shark teeth Splintering my rubber raft Sinking my pride Ops again, there goes my stride And I scream louder than ever before Stuck in some kind of sleep paralysis And I can’t awake, they won’t let me I guess I will always be that unpolished pearl I can't move I can't scream The Only thing I can do is wait Wait for him Him in the shadows To free To free me And I scream louder than ever before Stuck in some kind of sleep paralysis And I can’t awake, they won’t let me I guess I will always be that unpolished pearl I float upstream, currents know me Tease me, pull me near Down to the depths beneath the silt and the shit I’m just about breathing Although I’m still heaving And I scream louder than ever before Stuck in some kind of sleep paralysis

High Heel Shoes I feel like swinging in your half-moon eyes In the dead of night And I feel like I could walk all night in high heel shoes Just to be with you A curl of a hair around a finger tip The touch of a tongue on a quivering lip The dance of your breath now playing on my neck And the heat that I feel when you kiss me like this I feel like swinging in your half-moon eyes In the dead of night And I feel like I could walk all night in high heel shoes Just to be with you A turn of a head, the sweet sound of a sigh The arch of your back set black against the sky The smell of your skin both heady and shaken Make no mistake, my heart will be taken I feel like, I won’t say no I feel like swinging in your half-moon eyes In the dead of night And I feel like I could walk all night in high heel shoes Just to be with you
12.
All That Thinking Some times I’m scared At the end of another day All that thinking for nothing because nothing ever came And I don’t mind if it’s you But I’ll weep if it’s me One day I keep telling myself one day But if it never happens Of god, please let us be okay

Roses 03:32
Roses Three women Cousins’ war Different women Each with a cause Stealing beauty Steering lives Spinning webs Believing lies Red and white roses Red and whites fell Red and white rose Red and whites fell Times change Minds made One so close Taken by the blade They dared to ask They lived for pride Each step Steeped with blight Red and white roses Red and whites fell Red and white rose Red and whites fell

about

Beatrix Players London, UK

Beatrix Players make florid, adventurous music that operates at the interface between folk rock, singer-songwriter acoustica, prog and quasi-classical baroque chamber pop. There is a light, translucent quality to the music, and yet when it is not being hushed and reverent, it has the attack and thrust, the surging dynamism, of rock. It can be soft and intimate, yet fiery, intense and immense. ... more
